Life, love, and the pursuit of happiness — they say it’s what we’re all after. But here’s the kicker, the unspoken truth that lurks in the shadow of our every relationship: the foundation of a good life, of any successful relationship, lies not in the stars aligning, but in the gritty, often uncomfortable act of telling yourself the truth. And let’s be honest, that can feel like trying to swallow a cactus — prickly, painful, and not particularly palatable.

Your only real hope of fixing your situation, of improving your ability to start, maintain, and keep good relationships, is first to acknowledge that your current relationship just doesn’t work. That’s the crucial first step. You may feel it’s okay here, it’s fine there, occasionally great to good. Maybe you feel like your situation is in the shit. Either way, you need to throw out the old and create the new. Of course, I’m not asking you to tear down the walls of your life, but I expect you to think about renovation, reinvention, rebirth.

Unfortunately, many of us are like that person who constantly applies band-aids to a deep wound. Instead of seeking proper medical attention, like a rational human being, they slap on another band-aid, convinced it’s a cure. In reality, it’s just enough to cover the problem, to get through another day…
